The Simple Solution to Police Brutality: Training

Let’s not get distracted by race, and embrace the obvious

The most recent video of police brutality from the Memphis police department again vividly reveals the cause: Insufficient and incompetent training, full stop.

The five cops now charged with second-degree murder acted like freaked out, jacked teenagers. They literally couldn’t subdue an ostensibly compliant skinny guy.

Instead they began with insults, continued with pointless violence, ended by beating him to death. Don’t blame cops. The real culprits are their leaders who set them loose.

I managed busy bars in Chicago in the 90s. Off-duty police worked security. I witnessed escalation. Teaching empathy, control, and non-violent restraint are key.

Instead we release the police without basic training, and continuous accountability. The solution must be systemic overhaul. Anything less is criminal.

The past week Asians killed Asians, blacks killed blacks. We don’t need to defund the police. We need to re-fund training programs and demand reform.
