Despite the welcome optimism, the deal can’t last because:
- Israel will never tolerate Hamas staying in power
- Hamas is already reconstituting itself and gaining recruits
- Israel doesn’t believe in a two-state solution
- Hamas won’t stop until Israel is destroyed
- Israel has never been more powerful militarily
- Netanyahu’s survival depends on appeasing his militant right
